Aquarius (January 20- February 18)
Your February Horoscope by Susan Miller
Over the past few years, you've had to take whatever crumbs the universe had to throw your way. If you read the other signs' forecasts in those years, you knew that clearly, things were not equal. You probably felt on the short end of the stick, understandably, but now all that will change. The universe is about to make a correction.
Hold on to your hat, dear Aquarius. You are in for a rollickingly good time, with swift changes and really big news that will change your life for the better in very appreciable ways. In fact with the Sun, new moon, Mercury, Neptune, and in a few weeks, Venus, you'll be the headliner of the zodiac this month.
What's more, this month heralds the start of a two-year series of eclipses to fall in the Aquarius-Leo spectrum, and the very first eclipse will arrive on February 6.
If you begin February feeling jumpy and restless, it's simply due to your prescient nature. You sense that something big is about to happen, but you just can't put your finger on what exactly it will be. In the electrically charged atmosphere that is your world this month, if you can't sleep or feel that you are fidgeting more than usual, it would all be due to the coming eclipse in Aquarius.
You won't have to wait long to know the score. On or just after February 6, the new moon solar eclipse will set things in motion. All sorts of new situations and opportunities will come up and things will begin to happen so fast that you may feel swept along with the tide. Allow this to happen, but keep paddling your boat in the direction you want to go.
You will have a rare chance here to decide what you hope to create in your life. Is it more love? To gain greater career attention and influence? Build a better cash flow? Enjoy stronger health? Start a family or spend more time with your children? Find a way to express your creativity? This month, as you chart your course, no dream will be too big to fulfill.
You may have to give up one thing in your life to enjoy gain in another. Often to create the biggest changes we have to create room first to let it in. If you have too many people who waste your time, unnecessary responsibilities that wear you out, clutter that slows you down, and mountains of unfinished projects that remind you to get organized, you won't have room for the new exciting things due to come your way. Spend time now choosing what you want to keep and what should go. If you don't make room, you will be like a computer with too many applications open - a computer ready to crash. Although this year will be an important one for you, next year, 2009, will be even more so. Next year, with the good fortune planet Jupiter in a rare tour of Aquarius, you are due for the best year of your life.
You are known to be very independent and creative, and known to delight in doing just the opposite when someone says that whatever you have your eye on doing is not possible. Just to prove them wrong you will pull it all off with confidence and style, for you can't stand it when someone says, "You can't." This type of willfulness is about to come out in you again, thanks to the solar eclipse February 6, and that's good! That is what you were born to do!
A solar eclipse is similar to the power of three new moons. New options that come up now are about to be set out like magnificent French pastries on a silver tray. Your only problem will be to decide which goodies to put on your plate. Because of the solar eclipse, a whole new road will open for you, but it will be important not to scatter yourself over too wide a course. Fortunately as a fixed sign Aquarius, you tend to give your "all" to whatever you train your mind upon, and that's your secret to success.
The closer your birthday is to February 6, the more dramatic the changes will be in coming months. This is the first eclipse of a series due in 2008 and 2009. The next eclipses in this family of Aquarius- Leo will arrive on August 1 and 16 this year. We have one last eclipse in a long series of Virgo-Pisces due this month, February 20. Those highlighted (and at times, drained) your finances, but after this month, those eclipses won't be back for many years. More about the February 20 eclipse later.
The planetary action this month, especially thanks to the positive, friendly solar eclipse February 6, will allow you much more room to express creative ideas. This new moon and Sun will conjoin Neptune, planet of glamour, now in Aquarius. Neptune is in what we call "mutual reception" to Uranus, a mathematical concept that tells us Uranus will be acting like Neptune, and Neptune, more like Uranus, in a friendly buddy-buddy association. This bonding of two planets will increase the electrical current in your chart, turning you into a virtual idea machine. You'll be popping ideas out quicker than bills out of an ATM machine, and best of all, VIPs will tell you that your ideas are ten times as valuable.
Mars will be in beautiful angle to Neptune too this month, giving you plenty of energy and sex appeal. Mars is in your 5th house of love at the time of the eclipse, now moving at top speed (not retrograde as it was last month), so your powers of attraction should be strong. Go ahead, flirt your heart out - this month you'll be turning heads wherever you go, and may have no idea the reaction you're causing!
Venus will move into Aquarius on February 18, so wait until at least that time before you buy new clothes or reserve spa treatments or salon and special grooming treatments.
However, keep your birthday gift money under lock and key until at LEAST February 18, for Mercury will be retrograde until February 17. While spending for any expensive items is never a good idea when Mercury is retrograde, buying electronics is the biggest no-no. This month you will want to get well beyond both eclipses before you buy, for these solar and lunar phenomena are known to change priorities. Wait until March to shop and you'll be glad you did. Venus will remain in Aquarius until March 12, so you won't lose out by waiting to act next month, and you'll be glad you did.
Let's talk now about the second, lunar eclipse of February 20. This will be a full moon with very strong power and is set to fall in your 8th house of joint money matters. It seems a large bill may come due now, or you may decide to pay out for a very important purchase, say, for a house or car. Watch to see what happens within five days of this date.
It is also possible you will conclude a long-discussed deal or settlement, such as the division of property at the end of a marriage or business, or the reading of a will that has been contested in the courts for years and that will at long last be finalized. If nothing happens this month, then look to next month, near March 19, plus or minus five days.
The 8th house is not just about money but transformations, too. You may hear news about a female relative who needs an operation at the February 20 eclipse, and if so, you will need to be near her. Or, you may decide to have a medical or dental procedure done on yourself. Surgery comes under the 8th house domain of transformations - the surgeon removes all that your body no longer needs so that your body can renew itself.
If you need an operation and you trust your doctor, then do not fear the procedure - welcome it. Be glad there are good doctors in the world who perfectly understand your condition. If you can first get past the eclipse before you schedule your surgery, so much the better. Eclipses bring a whirlwind of activity with them, and it may be wise to wait to let the dust settle. I would recommend planning for a February 25 surgery date or anytime later. If you can't wait because of urgent medical reasons, that's fine, too - go with the flow.
I am sorry to report the next aspect, due February 24, that could turn out to be the lowest point of the month - possibly of the year. Saturn will oppose the Sun then, an annual event that makes everyone, of every sign, feel worn to the bone. The Sun rules your solar 7th house of partners, so your spouse may be critical. Or it may be that a business partner, manager, collaborator, or other person with whom you have a close one-on-one relationship will be unusually annoying. For sure, this day will be nobody's favorite day of the year.
You may be feeling depressed about the amount of bills that have piled up on your desk on this day, too. If so, realize that the mood you are in may stem from sheer exhaustion. Get more rest and tackle these questions another day.
Now let's turn to a happier topic: romance. As I mentioned earlier, your sex appeal and charm will be very magnetic now and you should have no trouble meeting interesting prospective partners. You'll be what they call "lightning in a bottle," dear Aquarius, so if you are looking for love, try to circulate this month. You may be amazed at how strong your powers of attraction truly are!
A blind date you have on February 1 will have real staying power, a day when Venus and Jupiter will combine stunning energies for a truly rare and sparkling day. The moon, in fire sign Sagittarius, will complement this pair and provide an extra glow.
The solar eclipse, February 6, will bring so many indications of a fresh start for you that there's no reason why love couldn't be part of the equation as well. Adopt a good attitude, show confidence, and expect the best to happen - this will be your winning combination. Your whole life is due to change soon, in the best ways!
Valentine's Day could be one of the best ones you've seen in years. Until now, you've been beset with Saturn opposed to your Sun for two long years, a very tough aspect. If single, you may have gone through a number of relationships before you developed a better idea of the person who would be your very own "true north." The moon on Valentine's Day will be in Gemini, and Mars will be there too, both lighting the most romantic part of your chart. Go for it!
If you want to call a romantic old flame to see if you can reconnect, do so from February 1 to 18, when your chances of clicking will be best.
Your very best romantic dates: February 1, 6, 7, 14, 15, and 29. Singles will do especially well on February 1 and 6.
Summary
Birthday month should be divine. With the Sun, a new moon, Neptune, Mercury, and later, Venus, all crowded in Aquarius, you'll be the center of attention. You will smartly and confidently take control of your life by making a number of key decisions. A new lifestyle will shape up for you in the coming year, evident in the days and weeks after the powerful solar eclipse appears on February 6.
A key financial matter will be finalized on or near February 21.
Don't implement your plans just yet, however, because the environment surrounding you will be quite variable, producing erratic results. Nothing will be precisely as it seems, and only later, in weeks to come, will you see this to be true. This is why you must wait.
A very positive solar eclipse will occur in Aquarius on February 6, so you can expect your birthday year ahead to be filled with change and fresh starts. This will be doubly true if your birthday falls within five days of February 6. You may move, take a new job, find a new love, travel - or more!
Your new path will open, immediately or at some point in the coming year. When the shift does occur, you will know in a flash of insight that your life has improved. Some elements of your blueprints will shift or need to be dropped when you see those priorities are suddenly less important to you, while other points you dearly desire (but assumed would take years to accomplish) will bring breakthroughs much sooner than you ever anticipated. Eclipses are known to speed up timetables at a dizzying speed.
Before you make any big announcements, however, wait until Mercury is out of retrograde. Mercury is in Aquarius this month, so you'll feel the haywire effects of this planet out of phase more powerfully than most. It IS a good time to look back and see how far you've come. Pat yourself on the back for the wise decisions you've made. Concerning the few decisions that proved "off" - don't worry about spilled milk. You are in the process of building a dream, and in any creative effort there will always be a mistake or two, and that is to be expected. Although Mercury will go direct on February 18, wait until March to move forward.
There will be a second eclipse on February 20, this time a full moon lunar eclipse in Virgo, likely to bring an ending or culmination to a major financial matter. If you have been in the process of getting a divorce, for example, this eclipse will bring the final agreement, assuming you've not agreed on a settlement over the past few months. A court case decision may be delivered to you, or talks about a commission, royalty, licensing deal, or other funds owed to you will be finalized. If you owe money, there will be no way to avoid paying up.
You may feel that the whole episode is a bit sad - Saturn will orbit close to this full moon and Saturn is the planet that often forces us to be practical and forgo unrealistic dreams in favor of ones that have a real chance of success. Although this eclipse is not due to be an easy eclipse, when it's finally over you will probably feel relieved and glad that you will be able to use your energy in more productive ways.
Also, there is nothing like discussions about money to reveal character or competency in a partner or adversary. In that sense, this full moon eclipse may be an eye opener.
In love, you'll be in a superb position to magnetize a new romantic interest or to bond closer to the one you love. With so many planets in Aquarius, you'll be in the driver's seat, a feeling you'll enjoy. In that respect, you get to pick and choose if single, and if attached, to get the full attention of your partner in the most loving way.
If single, be sure to schedule a blind date for February 1 when Venus and Jupiter will bring a sizzling evening just made for romance. February 6, a solar eclipse, could also bring on an electric meeting, so you really do need to socialize in February's first week.
Mars has been moving through your romance sector but has been in retrograde since November 15. Happily, as of January 31, Mars turned to direct speed and, now in fellow air sign Gemini, will help you in a powerful way to find love in the coming weeks. In fact, February could turn out to be one of your favorite months of the year for fun and love. There is nothing like the Red Planet to help change the direction of your life, and in this case, for the better!
If you are single and still pining for an old flame - give a call. Few could resist the full range of your charms this month! Mercury in retrograde is urging you to look back, so go ahead, see if you can make a go of things. You have nothing to lose.
Valentine's Day brings together a bouquet of fabulous planetary vibrations from Aquarius, and the moon will glide in compatible Gemini. Expect the best! You may even have to choose between two ardent admirers!

FEBRUARY 20 21 - VIRGO LUNAR ECLIPSE FULL MOON. 7:31 PM PST (Feb 21 3:31 AM GMT)
PART I - CURRENT ASTROLOGICAL INFLUENCES
SOLAR AND LUNAR ECLIPSES
Every six months we experience both a solar and lunar eclipse. In short, eclipses signal change. It is time to reevaluate our lives, reflect on our past and make decisions about our future. The Aquarius New Moon Solar Eclipse was February 6-7. The Sun, Moon, Neptune, Mercury, Chiron, Vesta and the North Node were all in Aquarius.
The Virgo Lunar Eclipse will be February 20-21. The Sun will be in Pisces and the Moon in Virgo. But Venus, Mercury, Chiron, Neptune and the North Node will still be in Aquarius. Since Mercury is retrograde January 7 through February 18th at 6:57PM PST, Mercury will spend double time in Aquarius - until March 14th.
This is a big dose of Aquarius energy. We will be confronted with shocks and surprises that cause us to transform at a deep level. We may find ourselves making profound decisions about how we wish to reorient our lives. After Mercury goes direct February 18th, Saturn will be the only planet retrograde until April 2nd, when Pluto goes retrograde. It is time to take action. Do what you need to do now.
PART II - MOVING INTO THE AQUARIAN AGE -
UNDERSTANDING THE AQUARIUS ARCHETYPE
FROM PERSONAL TO GROUP CONSCIOUSNESS
The last two signs of the zodiac are ruled by outer transpersonal planets - Uranus and Neptune. Uranus, Aquarius and the eleventh house are about (1) group consciousness and (2) our personal relationship and interaction with the human collective of which we are a part. Pisces, Neptune and the twelfth house symbolize transpersonal states of God consciousness. The dynamic of these signs, planets and houses is very different from the first ten.
We are currently moving into the Aquarian Age. As we approach 2012, it is important to understand the dynamic of the Aquarian archetype. When we move into Uranus or Aquarian territory, ideally we make the transition from personal-ego consciousness to group consciousness.
NEED TO BE PART OF A GROUP
The Aquarius archetype has the need to feel a part of a larger human community. It is only by participating in a group that we identify with that we find meaning, experience fulfillment, and fulfill our mission. As a member of the human collective, we seek to offer our special talents in service to the larger group of which we are a part.
Those with predominate (Sun, Moon, Rising or several planets) Uranian/Aquarian energies are especially drawn toward group involvement and social contribution. The Uranian/Aquarian impulse is motivated by group concerns and often does not consider personal concerns important. We can feel lost and frustrated if our main concern is for human welfare, but we do not know personally what we can contribute. Our Aquarian need to help improve the human condition can be expressed only if we have a skill or talent which we feel comfortable offering to the larger cause.
The natural tendency of the Aquarius impulse is to be sensitive to collective concerns. However, (1) if we do not have a core group to relate to, (2) if we are not yet sensitive to the higher expressions of collective consciousness or (3) if we live in a society where group consciousness has not evolved past the sheep mentality of mass consciousness, we can feel alienated and even psychologically disturbed. At the extreme, alcoholic, drug and mental problems can result from not knowing how to use Aquarian energy that has an intrinsic need to be part of a higher collective purpose.
The above points summarize the Aquarian challenge that we are dealing with as we make the transition to the Aquarian Age. We sometimes talk about the transition as though once December 2012 comes, it will be complete. But such is certainly not the case. Attaining Aquarian consciousness requires serious mental, emotional, spiritual and physical work. It also requires contributory participation in collective activities.
MAINTAINING OUR IDENTITY WITHIN THE GROUP
So what is involved in making our personal and collective transition to the Aquarian Age?
The Aquarian symbol is of a perfected human being who serves to bring innovative ideas and universal consciousness to humanity. Aquarius is the messenger sent from heaven to assist humankind. The highest expression of Aquarius is a humble servant. Lower expressions of this energy include righteous fanatics and rebels without a cause.
To acquire Aquarian consciousness, we must (1) establish and maintain our own personal identity (2) while we serve the highest evolutionary interests of the collective. Our first Aquarian lesson is thus to learn how to not lose ourselves in the group. To operate effectively and independently in the larger group, we must be inner directed. We must be able to decide voluntarily the extent and nature of our participation in furthering group goals.
If our personality is not solidly developed, we risk being swallowed up by or being a pawn of mass consciousness. The development of our own free will is thus a requirement to not get lost in and controlled by the 'maddening' crowd. Only when we are solidly integrated in our own sense of self are we able to effectively participate in the development and evolution of the larger group of which we are a part.
RAISING INDIVIDUAL CONSCIOUSNESS
The importance of raising the consciousness of each individual is absolutely critical to the effective operation of the Aquarian archetype. (Scary!) The group mind reflects the consciousness of the minds of the individuals of the group. Egotistical, selfish, 'need to be in control,' and 'I am right' behavior of individuals keep the group at a low level. Individuals must move into higher states of conscious to positively participate in the evolution to a higher dynamic of the group mind. In other words, the positive or the dysfunctional unfoldment of the Aquarian Age is directly related to the quality and results of our personal inner work.
The Aquarian archetype wants to be free. But freedom is a state of mind, not a dogmatic, ideological, political statement. As the Aquarian impulse gets stronger on the Planet, we may become more aware of how those who still operate out of lower consciousness justify their righteous actions and try to impose their beliefs upon others. It will become more and more obvious that the cultivation of internal ethics is an absolute requirement for the 'no rules' society that Aquarius likes to advocate. Only when individuals are inner-directed by a higher sense of ethics that respects others' beliefs, requests and boundaries can the idealized Aquarian dream of a less legislated and regulated society work.
THE LONER ISOLATED IN THE CROWD
Our inner Aquarius does not feel like we fit into the group. And the 'group' doesn't always perceive Aquarius as one of the 'in crowd.' Aquarius is not particularity adept at superficial interactions and not particularly interested in casual friendships. Aquarius often acts as an outsider and seems to indulge in behaviors that do not conform to common standards. Our inner Aquarius can thus set us apart from the most common social groups - family, religion, employment, school - simply because we don't feel a bond of common interest.
Aquarius often conceals his/her sense of loneliness by attention-getting behavior. He/she also tries to call attention to him/herself by glamorizing his/her uniqueness. *(1) He/she is both self-conscious and eager to demand attention. Aquarius longs to feel a sense of belonging, but we don't know where we belong. We want to feel like a valued individual within the group, but we can't identify 'the group.' We isolate ourselves because we are afraid of being rejected.
Aquarius needs to learn how to relate to 'the larger Group.' But if we can't find a core group of like-minded souls to interact with, we often can't make the connection with the more impersonal collective. Simply engaging in social activities does not deliver us to meaningful participation. Buying into the ideas of a group which we don't really identify with excludes our uniqueness and makes us miserable.
THE EXISTENTIAL CHALLENGE
Both relationships with others who share the same vision and social acceptance are important to Aquarius. Aquarius wants to belong. But without serious inner mind/heart work, Aquarius has no idea where he belongs. The unevolved Water Bearer (1) is often a loner, (2) has an aloof demeanor and (3) seems to like to isolate himself. This is because he is (1) lost in his wildly illusive mind, (2) has not found his inner orientation, and (3) has not opened his heart.
Although Aquarius longs to belong, there is something about who Aquarius is and what he does that often alienates the Water Bearer from normal social groups and interactions. The Aquarian dilemma cannot be found simply by finding a friendly group to associate with. The deeper sharing which we crave can only be found (1) as we acquire a more profound understanding of the evolutionary purpose of society. (2) We have to experience within ourselves human values that transcend the most common social groupings that usually separate rather than unite us - religion, politics, nationality, gender and race.
The existential challenge for Aquarius is to realize that what our energy is seeking - a meaningful community to relate to, to be a part of and to serve - requires inner shifts that make it energetically possible to attract and be able to meaningfully interact with our 'soul group.'
CONNECTING WITH OUR COMMON HUMANITY
Our inner Aquarius is able to find our purpose and utilize our potential only when we connect with the most common denominators of our shared humanity. This is not a theoretical expose of the qualities that we all wish to embody. It is a personal experience of (1) humility, (2) gratitude (3) compassion and (4) oneness. It is within our own psyche that we become part of a global community that knows no boundaries and espouses no ideology.
We are liberated from our isolation and aloneness only when (1) our mind expands to include the hopes of every human being and (2) our heart can feel the love that beats is everyone's heart. Inner mistrust, defensiveness and isolation only attract painful interpersonal experiences. Only when we can open our hearts to other human beings without (1) judgment, (2) classification, (3) desire to attract attention, or (4) neediness can we experience the inclusiveness that we so desire.
Our ability to commit to and participate in our global community is possible only when the inclusiveness that we long for is internalized in our own psyche. Universal and personal merge only in higher consciousness. Possibilities of unfolding into this consciousness are present everywhere in our daily lives.
THE OUTER PLANETS AWAKEN THE UNCONSCIOUS
The outer planets - Uranus, Neptune and Pluto - represent energies that are not personal, but collective and universal. They are present in the human psyche as the collective unconscious or transpersonal consciousness. The psyche of humanity is unified though the common connection with these energies. Since these energies permeate the collective consciousness, both our personal crises and growth affect all of humanity.
The effects of these planetary archetypes often disrupt our emotional, mental and physical security and comfort. The goal is bring to our attention something fundamental that must be changed. The outer planets represent unconscious urges of our soul toward wholeness and a desire for expanded consciousness. (*2) Instead of fighting our unconscious, we are invited to bring it into awareness. As we do so, we can experience the power and gifts that lie hidden inside us.
Our awakening process causes another kind of existential suffering. The greatest anguish of community-oriented Aquarius is isolation from fellow human beings. The paradox is that when we are unconscious we feel separate and alone. However, as we begin to achieve higher states of awareness, we find that we no longer fit in with the common unconscious folk and suffer from another form of isolation. In elevating ourselves energetically, we initially feel like we are separating ourselves from the rest of humanity. The pain of this loneliness comes from the fact that we can never again return to our unconscious state. *(3)
The above, however, is a temporary stage. The answer is 'keep going.' The more we open our minds and hearts, we more we connect with and are comforted by the common threads shared by all humanity.
THE DESTROYERS
Shiva is the destroyer in Hindu mythology. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto play the role of destroyers in astrological symbology. They disrupt the core of our limited ego structure so that we can have a view of the larger reality of which we are a part. *(4)
The outer planets 'destroy' the veil that prevents us from experiencing a vaster, soulful sense of self and life. Their goal is to open our minds to a greater perspective of reality. 'Cosmic' experiences are generally not easily accessible to human consciousness. The outer planets work on our unconscious to wake us up.
The more unable and unwilling we are to recognize the urges of our soul and its collaboration with universal forces to deliver us to an awakened state, the more the effects of these energies appear as tragedies and senseless destruction. It is not bad luck, fate or a revengeful god, but our personal ignorance of the evolutionary drive of our soul that is the problem.
THE URANIAN WAKE UP PROCESS
Uranus is not a slow acting planet. When Uranian energy impacts our lives, we are faced with sudden crises, often involving conflicts with authority, tradition and convention. The lightening speed of Uranus surprises and shocks us. Unexpected events shatter beliefs, values, relationships and situations that previously felt safe and secure. All of a sudden, what we counted on is no longer available, trustworthy or working in our favor.
We attract external events to wake us up (1) when we are unable to consciously perceive our need to change, (2) when we cannot think and act to support our soul evolution, (3) and when our mind is clogged with attachments that keep it from opening to higher awareness. The 'accidental, chance and fateful' events are attempts to free ourselves from situations, beliefs and relationships that no longer serve our soul's goals.
SYNCHRONICITY
Becoming a functional adult requires being able to think independently for ourselves. The Aquarian archetype helps us evolve into higher states of maturity. Aquarius and Uranus energies cause us to perceive, or at least admit, and attempt to become conscious of the fact that what we call synchronicity or chance is rooted in our own unconscious. Somehow, know it or not, it is our interaction with universal energies that causes things to happen in our lives.
Things may seem to happen totally out of the blue. But no matter how random things may seem, Uranus teaches us that our energy and thoughts strategically intercept with forces outside ourselves to make things happen.
THE AQUARIAN MIND - BEYOND THE LIMITED EGO
Beyond the perimeter of our personal ego, we get in touch with universal energies that open our hearts and give us the experience of our oneness. If we are able to (1) maintain our individual identity (2) become a vessel to transmit universal energy and (3) humbly communicate universal truths, we can move to a higher level of human functioning and serve a higher purpose - We can embody the Aquarian archetype.
If we are unable to keep our sense of self separate from universal energies, we can lose touch with personal and earthly reality. This is a serious challenge for both Aquarius and Pisces, whose uninitiated minds are lost in some unidentified spaced out zone. The unconscious Aquarian is (1) spaced out, (2) lost in the void and (3) aloof. To be functional, Aquarius must bring unconscious functions into consciousness. Aquarian consciousness must be cultivated.
It is definitely worth doing the work. The gifts of the inventive Aquarian mind include (1) the power of thought to affect matter, (2) intuitive visions (3) receptivity to information and wisdom from the universal mind and (4) the capacity to work with ideas until they are manifested in physical reality. The awakened Aquarian mind is connected to the universal mind, not to collective unconscious. It pulls in new, not old or conventional, ideas. Aquarian ideas have not been tested or proven. They offer innovative, revolutionary possibilities to old problems that previously seemed to have no solution.
ISOLATION AND RESOLUTION OF THE AQUARIAN DILEMMA
Immature Aquarius can feel powerless in face of the overwhelming power of the collective and mass consciousness. We can also feel threatened by impersonal social structures. Yet at some level we also wish to experience a sense of belonging to our common humanity. It is this urge to belong and to connect that unconsciously forces us to end our isolation. Our heart longs to experience the common threads that unite all human beings. The collective heart lures us to enter the arena of humanity.
The 'secret shadow-impetus behind the one who must help others,' is to relieve some of loneliness of consciousness. *(5) We find that our search for a 'cure' to our anguish is found in serving our community. Our pain subsides only in service to humanity. When we work directly with others, we open our hearts. It is only in our heart, not in our mind, that we truly find the connection we desire with other human beings.
INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP - LEO/AQUARIUS POLARITY
The Aquarius-Leo polarity is about (1) the relationship of the individual to the group and about (2) what happens in our individual psyche when we interact with a larger group. *(6) Some people more eagerly, willingly and openly participate in their community. Some silently participate by doing their inner work and holding the space of love. Some are acutely aware of the impact of the whole on the individual and how individuals in turn shape the whole. Others are not.
Leo and Aquarius ask 'How does the individual interact with, integrate with and impact the group?' They realize that the group organism is defined by and held together by the shared ideas, ideals and thoughts of it members. The goal of the Leo-Aquarius polarity is to support individuality in the context of the collective unit. The group works best when our individual creativity fruitfully contributes to the welfare of all.
Aquarius also knows that we feel isolated because we seek a deeper connection than superficial interactions. If we truly want to have a profound level of exchange with other human beings, we have to go inside ourselves and connect with our hearts. Leo teaches us that it is only in our heart that we find a true communion with other human beings. We have to integrate the Aquarian polarity - Leo - to become a true Aquarius.
SHIFT OF APPROACH/PARADIGM
A common theme of political ideologies is the relationship between individuals and the collective. Political ideologies often see either the individual or the collective as the most important factor. Either the idealistic individualist is pitted against the repressive system or the righteous system represses the 'disrespectful individualist. ' Aquarius teaches us that the fight over whether the ultimate authority should be vested in the individual or the group can only be resolved when individuals connect not through ideology, but in the heart, to work toward common goals. Aquarius works toward the personal awakening that makes this level of integration and participation possible.
How do we resolve our collective problems and conflicts? The Aquarian archetype teaches us that to solve problems we have to expand our perspective so we can see another more inclusive solution. Our consciousness is raised to a new level where we perceive collectively and universally, not just personally. Uranus shakes up our consciousness so we can shift our view of reality and then work together to evolve collectively. Aquarius specializes in creating these profound paradigm shifts of the mind and heart.
PART III - DEEPENING YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
HOW TO BECOME A FUNCTIONAL AQUARIAN
Aquarius is the third and final air sign. Gemini, the first air sign, introduces us to the duality dynamics of the rational mind, which dances between the negative/protective mind and positive/expansive mind. Libra introduces us to the neutral mind - showing us the way out of the confines and conflicts of duality. Aquarius links us up with the collective mind and the universal mind.
The Aquarian mind is 'out there.' Until Aquarius becomes conscious, it is lost. It tries to guard itself against the intrusion of the collective unconscious by being a rebel. But externally directed rebellion does not bring universal connection or inner peace.
To cultivate Aquarian consciousness, we have three main tasks.
(1) Mind - open the third eye and crown chakra and awaken the personal mind to the higher universal mind. Practice paying attention to the expanded dynamics of your mind. Tune into and focus your listening on the higher messages that you receive in your mind. Pay attention to the expansiveness of your mind. Then be sure to contain and infuse this awareness in your body.
(2) Heart - expand the mind space to include the heart. Meditate on your heart until you actually open your heart to yourself and feel compassion, non-judgment and a heart connection with yourself, with others, with the Planet and with the Universe.
(3) Body - Exercise everyday and feel the life force in your body. Keep connecting with your body until you experience it as a vessel for the flow of Divine Energy.
You can practice the above with any Kundalini yoga kriya. There are several sets in Transitions to a Heart-Centered World *(7) that are especially powerful in creating the internal changes that facilitate this expansion in consciousness. One is "Cleansing the Lymph Glands" on pages 66-67. Another is "Heart of Gold" on page 59.
The critical thing is that we must practice becoming conscious. Take a minute or two between each exercise and at least 5 minutes at the end of your practice to consciously connect with and integrate mind, heart and body. Kundalini yoga and meditation activates and awakens possibilities. Only conscious paying attention permanently shifts our consciousness. Schedule in time and commit to paying attention and cultivating awareness. You will be delightfully pleased with your progress. And you will be participating in the positive unfoldment of the Aquarian Age. Sat Nam!

Re: Wonky Bonky
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 9:07 PMMore on the Jan-Feb 2008 Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius Eclipse Triggering the Grand Irrationality
by Robert Wilkinson
When Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius it's a good time to re-examine our internal connections, and find what we've lost in the way of ideal visions of a greater way that make us feel like we're contributors to a better world. Take a new look at your internal and external ways of why you do or do not want to be part of a larger group work, and how we can concretize that which feeds our sense of greater purpose through managing collective power.
Many will need to reconsider goals, ambitions, and friendships that are no longer fulfilling, and ways of responding to perceived shared creative vision that are either draining or generating momentum. Through seeing what's being grounded in the way of a new visionary imperative, we can come to mental power and forms of expressing ourselves throughout the rest of the cycle.
Rehearse, research, review, and allow yourself to practice making previous ideas and information part of your integrated power. It's a different learning pace, with things being glimpsed that we didn't before helping us come to a more thorough and well-rounded knowledge of whatever information and views that Mercury brought us before now.
Regard much that presents itself these next few weeks in terms of seeing a larger contribution with others to our world and understanding the emotional-social-cultural connections that are strengthened by cooperation in launching a shared vision. This is the rearranging of groups of people who belong together, which each personality contributing its unique flavor to the overall collective energy.
Find those who share your ideals, and allow individuality to be "uplifted" by the group energy. This is the extension of what we got earlier in 2007 that allowed us to prove our capacity to do what we claim to be able to do, and then mid-year integrate decisions showing a new life allegiance and dedication. Those who searched for the Mystery found a new form of God, Truth, and Eternal Self taking flight in their lives.
Early 2007 we got management skills and efficiency in knowing what and how things work. Saturn configured in important ways with the two Merury stationary direct points at 26 Aquarius and Scorpio since November 2006, magnetising “Efficient Functioning” in whatever ways it has in our lives. It showed as new goals, ambitions, friendships, and group endeavors, and we had opportunities to manage our spiritual energies in ways that prove our ability to deliver a higher power while glimpsing our potential "spiritual community."
As I pointed out in the first article in this series, Mercury does not make many frictional aspects this retrograde period, with only a semisquare to Jupiter. However, during the last half of January and the first Few days of February it will trigger the destiny-producing aspects we know as the Grand Irrationality. This time is when the imagery of the collective consciousness (and Unconscious) can be seen, known, and expressed through Mercury's magic. At worst, unrealistic ideas or delusions arising from mass consciousness. At best, inspired visions bringing more idealistic and altruistic group efforts.
The semisquare between Mercury and Jupiter that rule signs opposing each other show a challenging time of finding ways to reconcile frictions associated with the Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces areas of our charts. As the semisquare is waxing, it will result in "emergent crises" and changes in vision and understanding that will yield new ways to envision things, new goals to aim for and new methodolgies of achievement, with new stability between our imagination and our conrete minds after the retrograde period is over.
This aspect creates internal crises of deciding what we need to learn about a greater reality, how we need to view possibilities, morality, truth, and our future. It challenges us to be able to think "outside the box" while not yielding to vain imaginings or contradictory thinking. This will challenge our ability to concentrate on that which is beyond the structures we're expanding within.
Of course, keep in mind that this crisis is precipitated by the understanding Jupiter is coming to through its recent quintile to Uranus and trine to Saturn. This is a crisis of perception to see a bigger picture as a result of the understanding and stability shown by Jupiter trine Saturn in Earth signs.
So in this front end of the Mercury RX semisquare Jupiter, there will be cross currents between the Gemini/Virgo and Sag/Pisces areas of our charts. It challenges us to be more realistic about where our imagination is taking us and linking the lower with the Higher Mind to embrace a more organized, visionary way of responding to the practical (if obscure at times) opportunities already presenting themselves to us.
This configuration usually accompanies a very high degree of imagination and persuasiveness. Find practical ways of expressing your sense of possibilities at the beginning of this larger cycle without being too extravagant or exaggerated in your perception. This can bring forth a visionary mind able to see things through others' eyes.
This retrograde will be dominated by the Solar Eclipse New Moon of February 6-7 at 18 Aquarius explained in detail in the article, The Solar Eclipse of February 6-7, 2008 in Aquarius. The Eclipse just happens to be exactly trine the New Moon dominating the previous October-November 2007 Mercury Retrograde at 18 Libra, conditioning what we've been going through since then. As I wrote then. that energy involved
... facing consequences for social risks, and the responsibility of individuals to their society regarding behavior... Open to greater opportunities and a greater vision, face certain obvious facts, and move toward multi-tasking or learning new information. Return to the values that can help you express your Higher Self in a joyous, balanced way. Work on how you package your self-expression, and enjoy the productivity...
Mercury is heavily influenced by Saturn and Uranus this retrograde period, since it occupies the sign these planets rule. As these are in a wide orb opposition that will get closer over time, this is a period of seeing what Saturn lessons and responsibilities we've been given since September 2007, and find new perspectives and wisdom from the experience. Make your "daily driver" more discerning, better organized, with an eye to how the details rank in terms of the overall picture.
The specific lesson of the Eclipse affecting this retrograde involves learning to put to good use the "in betweens," or the down times between actions, feelings, and thoughts. Even though everyone is squeezed to the max these days, that's why we must learn how to take moments to recharge while still taking care of business.
These should be specific to the Higher Law of our Being in individual ways. What we share will be a challenge to improve ourselves and our faith. We are all re-experiencing a period of revolutionizing self-improvement at the end of a long cycle of preparing to express it based in our uniqueness.
All in all, this is mainly a favorable eclipse, due to the number of harmonious aspects strengthening the lunation. There are favorable aspects to every planet except Pluto, and a very strong trine to a Mars quintile Saturn. The semisquare to Pluto will be triggering subjective "emergent crises" through an unveiling that will serve to purify wherever it falls in our charts. These can lead us to important insights regarding Pluto's contact with the Galactic Center helping free us from local conditions, narrow thinking, overattachment to rationality, and unhelpful perceptions.
As with all Mercury retrograde periods, review, reflect, research, gather information, and take a new look at your power to change your point of view and interpretations. This gives a chance to shift how you do what you do, how you coordinate your affairs, and indicates future shifts in the areas where Aquarius falls in your birth charts.
And now, a last look back: The Mercury retrograde period in October-November 2006 showed us how to understand the emotional movement of 2006 so we could be more fluid in our responses and feel more deeply. Many got in touch with needs and feelings and became more certain in our focus, and began eliminating unhelpful corrosive tendencies as we moved into new dynamic activity resulting from seeing how we could be more efficient and adaptable. It activated the individual-mental-Spiritual level of “Faith,” and retrograded back to the mental Spiritual and emotional-cultural levels of “Communion.”
The retrograde period in February-March 2007 emphasized the Individual-Mental-Spiritual level of "Federation," then retrograded back through the Emotional-Social-Cultural and Physical levels into the Individual-Mental-Spiritual level of "Management." We saw ways to manage ourselves and our energies, leading to transfigurations as we "left our cocoon," and joined with new friends. Summer 2007 we saw our needs and home experience differently, reworked some things about our everyday lives and experience, and grounded new emotional responses.
Autumn brought us new connections, reawakened some ties from the past, and led us all to a new heart's strength. We learned a deeper communion with others, as well as finished up old karmas and paid some dues while preparing to move headlong toward the very important conjunctions between Jupiter and other planets with Pluto at the Galactic Center. The consequences we faced last Autumn have led directly to the wider vision and energy management challenges confronting us now.

Tue, February 12, 2008 - 9:07 PMNew Look At Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius in January-February 2008 - What Is It Good For?
by Robert Wilkinson
Over the years many have asked me what Mercury retrograde is good for. We know it's supposedly NOT a good time to sign contracts, make purchases of electronics or major moves or decisions, and we are supposed to hang out with the energies, seeing that things may not be as they appear, and so on. That said, there is much that a Mercury retrograde period is good for, such as traveling, research, and other important things.
I have found that as long as one is flexible, retrograde travel is actually a good thing. So is research, reflection, review, rehearsals, and returns from the past. It's also a great time for reconnecting with old friends, finding people and things thought lost, It's a great time to explore possibilities, as long as no definitive decisions are made and options kept open, since they are usually modified or reversed later on.
It's great for doing things left undone or neglected from previous times. It's good for resuming something from the past, as long as you remember that it may not look like it used to, or requires a different approach than before. It's also excellent for getting new information and perspective that fills in gaps in understanding or activity, and doing things that seem to go in one direction but lead us to entirely new information and understanding.
We can safely resume things begun in previous retrograde periods, or pick up threads we once set aside while other things developed. It's an energy that favors building in a time lag in judging or evaluating whatever you're doing, since retrogrades often show that there are things yet to develop that will ultimately fill in whatever is missing in the present.
This Mercury Retrograde conjuncts the Solar Eclipse of February 6-7. For the near future, expect signs, signals, and communications related to this time of unveiling of mysteries we're all going through one way and another. Here's how it's already manifested in my own life and affairs:
I've already had three old friends check in I haven't heard from in many months or years, and long delayed communications have been made both to and from me to others. A modem I requested in November finally got here after the point I could use it, and I was able to reconstruct a computer work station making my life easier while not being able to get a driver to work so I could get another computer up and running needed for this site's future growth.
I was given a brilliant, simple, and necessary suggestion for my website I should have done two years ago, and done other things that also should have been done a while ago. I'm finding I have to rearrange the order of major projects I have been planning to achieve a greater vision, and getting radically different insights into how to synthesize the different areas of my life so they work better.
So what else can we expect from Mercury retrograde in Aquarius? Besides giving a different atmosphere to anything we have in Gemini or Virgo, and the house it's retrograding through will feel more Mercurial, today I'll offer you a bit from my book, "A New Look At Mercury Retrograde," from the chapter on Mercury retrograde in the signs. Here's what I wrote about Mercury retrograde in Aquarius:
In this sign the mind searches for concretized ideals, or ideas about world or social service. The mind synthesizing ideas, then recombines the possibilities into newer, different syntheses. Mercury here seeks a universal vision by looking within holistically. It seems able to see and know things from a different space and time continuum.
There may be insights into old friends, or old ambitions, or a new look at old values sustaining one's sense of honor. This is the resourceful mind judging from the highest ideal, offering new applications of old principles.
Mercury in Aquarius is in its own 6th sign. This position makes practical adjustments through synthesis. Discussion of ideals is seen to be a form of service, as it prepares the abstract mind to search for practical applications of truth.
It is also in its own 9th sign, giving the power of synthesis as a truth expressing itself through an integrated vision. Here a stabilized higher vision is offered to others. This position sees world service as a truth. Knowing comes through seeing the unified vision.
When retrograde in Aquarius, Mercury transits through the sign of its exaltation. These are the energies that offer Mercury its greatest grounds for growth into its most excellent function. Keep seeing a bigger picture, a larger contribution to your world, a wider group of friends and personal effectiveness within a collective project. Learn management techniques so you can successfully "launch your vision" later in February.
That brings us back to something I said earlier: Hang out with the energies and information, pay attention to details while remembering that a lot of it won't make sense for several weeks or months, and don't believe everything you're told. It will be a great time to see to the core of things, taking a wide view of recent entries into a new life, new motive, new feelings, and why certain closures were necessary.
Mercury retrograde in Aquarius is great for finding a new view of a greater vision, new forms of ideal activity or world service, and definitely a new look at goals, ambitions, and ideals of friendship in whatever life area is indicated by the house Mercury is moving through. We are stabilizing a new set of life patterns over the next few weeks, so detach, see the big picture, be a true friend to yourself and others, and make your life a miracle of "doing the Angel of your Being."

Tue, February 12, 2008 - 9:09 PMThe Way of Buddha and the Way of Bodhisattva - Two Eternal Choices That Confront Us All
by Robert Wilkinson
Many on a path to Truth, at least once if not more often, wish they could retire from the world, and seek a life of contemplation and purposeful activity away from the hectic pace of the modern urban existence. Many have planets in key signs or houses showing these kinds of past life karmas, and are caught in an internal dilemma of retreating from the world to do "spiritual practice," or hang out in the world of desires, achievements, and different kinds of relationships that can be either pleasurable, painful, or both. Today we consider a few key points to remember as we dance through initiatives and retreats in our lives.
With Jupiter in Pisces, for many decades I've wrestled with whether to focus on going inward, or on outer accomplishments. It seems like every time I've desired to go inward, the world pulls me to address its needs, and yet when I finally put my whole heart into outer achievements, I am pulled inwardly. It seems like we are always called to find a point of inner equilibrium as we do obvious and subtle dances with the movements from within outward, and from without inward, sometimes both going on at the same time.
I've known many who wish for their own private desert island or retreat center, but probably would find it too boring after a short time. Even trying to create and maintain a "retreat center" of any sort will involve a LOT of activity, very little of which has anything to do with the contemplative life! So while we long for a measure of peace, solitude, and stillness to go inward, we also long to know we're doing a productive activity.
This dilemma of choosing the inner versus the outer is part of an age-old duality all of humanity has sought to resolve for centuries. To use a timeless metaphor to describe this "choice," it could be called the difference between the so-called "Way of the Buddha" versus the "Way of the Bodhisattva." One is inward and transcendent, the other outward and compassionate.
The Way of realizing the ultimate "Buddha-nature" strives for ultimate transcendence of all form and desire, and finally passes away into a state called "Nirvana," or absolute bliss of the beyond of Existence. We are told this Path leads the consciousness never to return to the world of duality and impermanent forms.
The Way of the Bodhisattva, on the other hand, posits that the ultimate state is to behold fulfillment and perfection of understanding, but turn away from the Gate to No-form, and return to this world to teach in order to lessen the suffering of other beings. This state is enlightened, yet remains in the World to demonstrate compassion in many forms to assist those who suffer. One is the Way of Transcendence. One is the Way of Compassion.
We learn these with every experience we go through. It seems fairly easy to see how we walk both of these paths at different times, each playing off the other yet standing on its own as feeding our enlightenment. If we wonder whether we should go into retreat for any long period of time, I believe if we have important questions concerning outer things and how to perfect them, that would imply it's not yet time to go monastic as a life style, though of course a short period of solitude and contemplation is probably useful to sort things out and see it all as an interconnected whole.
For those of us with bills to pay and aspirations to create a better world, both our own and with others, we must continually engage the world. The monastic life doesn't pay much, regardless of its other benefits! That's why I've known that in my own case I needed to create a life with much (blessed) solitude, yet where I could still be highly productive in my chosen fields with many human associations, quite a few of focused spiritual intent.
All of us have a 12th house, showing the energies and times for us to retreat to see things as a whole and retire from old patterns preparing for new experiences. While it is very important to know when to retire from parts of our world, we cannot retire from the world simply to escape into our private world, refusing to contribute to our world's improvement. To paraphrase the wisdom of the I Ching, when we retire it must be for the purpose of realizing the higher aspirations of humanity within us. At some point, the Way of the Bodhisattva will call us to distill our realizations into forms where we can lessen the suffering in our world, however we can accomplish that.
This dance between fulfilling the inward call to Realization and the outer call to Fulfillment helps us learn one of Saturn's binding lessons, that of learning to take responsibility for making correct choices, whether they're easy or hard. We must stand responsible for both knowing and living the wisdom to be found in our experiences, both pleasurable and painful. We will choose many directions throughout life. It is our job to make sure to change direction when appropriate, and hold firm when we must, in order to persevere in fulfilling our Higher Self's potential.
The Way of Transcendence may or may not be a chimera for most of us, since we are bound by Karma in a web of Light/Life with our entire Soul field of loved ones. Even if we think we want it, I believe our Divine Heart would ultimately call to our Divine Mind to pay attention to Love. If Love is the universal binding force, from one point of view even our form of "Transcendence" is but a product of our Higher Love attracting all that we desire about that Way. Thus transcendence itself is dependent on Love, or the Way of Bodhisattva, for its manifestation in any form whatsoever.
There are good reasons to focus on the Way beyond duality and the worlds of manifestation, since these are inherently unreal. By striving for that which is beyond form, beyond measurement, we are told from timeless sources that we can attain a perfectly enlightened point of Absolute Consciousness. However, the Way of Compassion shows there are equally good reasons to pay attention to our Higher Desire for Life itself, that we may bring forth flowers of conscious wisdom and love making our lives and world a more joyous place to do our Being.
The two Ways seem to mirror our breath - we breathe one in, we breathe it out, we take a different breath, we exhale that breath, in an unending sequence of helping our blood to circulate from and to our heart. Perhaps this is our task - to surrender all forms and merge into the Great Mystery, then remember enough of that transcendent Wisdom to bring forth flowers of Love and Intelligent activity in our world, each at the right time, so we long for nothing and do everything for its own sake in its own time.
Who among us can say what "enlightenment" really looks like, except as a function of a Consciousness, a space and time that seem to be "here and now," and that which recognizes the specificity of how the Consciousness manifests? Strive for that which cannot be known by the 5 senses and the mind, but which can be experienced directly, without needing any thing or person to facilitate it. Then do what you have to do.

Growth through Affection
Aquarius Daily Horoscope
You may feel expressive with your loved ones today and find yourself making a strong effort to share your feelings of love and affection. You might feel led to verbalize your feelings, reveal your hopes and dreams, or simply spend quality time strengthening the bonds you share with the important people in your life. While you may find it easy to open your heart to others today, you may want to keep in mind that your loved ones may hesitate in reciprocating your affection if they are taken aback by your gestures, or if they are simply unaccustomed to opening up so completely. Rather than taking their reservation personally, you can simply focus on sharing your affection without the expectation of anything in return, and allow the sharing itself to be its own reward.
Sharing our love and affection with others inspires a feeling of empowerment about improving the quality of our relationships, even if the response we receive from others isn’t what we had hoped. Rather than placing unrealistic expectations on the quantity of affection we receive from others, we can choose to immerse ourselves joyfully in simply sharing our own affection. Not only does this help us feel more empowered about enhancing the quality of our relationships, but we contribute our own special energy to the strengthening of the bonds we cherish. Regardless of the response you receive from others today, sharing your affectionate feelings can only serve to help your relationships grow and prosper.

Debunking Mercury Retrograde
by Donna Cunningham
Pop astrology has created entirely too much hysteria about Mercury retrograde. I’ve had endless phone calls from clients and prospective clients hyperventilating over the fact that Mercury was about to turn retrograde. We are told to sign nothing, buy nothing, make no major purchases, and to expect cancellations, missed appointments, bank errors, and being stood up on social engagements. We are given reams of anecdotes and horror stories to back up this taboo. And yet, vast numbers of people buy cars, begin jobs, get married, and buy homes while Mercury is retrograde without experiencing any difficulty whatsoever. The world simply cannot come to a screeching halt for the three or four periods a year that Mercury is retrograde for three weeks at a stretch. Imagine the impact on the economy if it did!
Why, then, do so many followers of astrology find these periods troublesome?
Pop astrology has created entirely too much hysteria about Mercury retrograde. I’ve had endless phone calls from clients and prospective clients hyperventilating over the fact that Mercury was about to turn retrograde. We are told to sign nothing, buy nothing, make no major purchases, and to expect cancellations, missed appointments, bank errors, and being stood up on social engagements. We are given reams of anecdotes and horror stories to back up this taboo. And yet, vast numbers of people buy cars, begin jobs, get married, and buy homes while Mercury is retrograde[2] without experiencing any difficulty whatsoever. The world simply cannot come to a screeching halt for the three or four periods a year that Mercury is retrograde for three weeks at a stretch. Imagine the impact on the economy if it did!
Why, then, do so many followers of astrology find these periods troublesome? By well-known metaphysical principles, the power of belief can cause followers of astrology to manifest more Mercury retrograde difficulties than in the general population. By repeated negative suggestion, we can talk ourselves into making major blunders during this time, because we “know” they’re going to happen. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and when the inevitable snafus of daily living do occur, devotees of astrology say, “I told you so,” reinforcing the belief. It has also become a convenient excuse for sloppy thinking or incompetence, as well as a socially acceptable reason for not showing up for commitments. Then too, it’s more dramatic to blame your mental vagaries on the stars than to confess that you’ve had a senior moment!
It would be interesting to conduct a research project in which a roomful of people who are interested in astrology but who are not astrology students are told that Mercury is retrograde. After a description of the pitfalls ascribed to it, they are asked to write down examples of how it has been operating in their lives over the past week or two. The only thing is, the experiment would be conducted at a time when Mercury was not retrograde at all, but direct and clipping right along. I'm willing to bet that, by power of suggestion, nearly every person in that room would come up several juicy textbook examples of Mercury retrograde situations.
That's not to say that there's nothing to it…there are things I simply could not be induced to do in those periods, like buy software or communications equipment. I'm cautious to check important communications and appointments and back up computer files. I double check all astrological data for my clients and advice column and add all totals twice where money is concerned. I back up important computer files before the retrograde starts and continue backing them up regularly. It is a good idea to do backups periodically anyway, but the impending event of Mercury going retrograde prompts me to tackle the job. (Whatever works!)
Still, the Mercury REtrograde periods are a natural and even helpful recurrent cycle, totaling no more than 70 days each year—it is part of the natural rhythm of life, just like the seasons. At these times, we get the opportunity to REthink, REview, and REvise our thinking and our written and spoken communication. If we use it to REexamine the flow of our work and our day-to-day lives, these little mishaps can teach us something about Right Action. They can be a valuable corrective that helps us prevent more serious and ongoing errors in our work that might otherwise be compounded over time. Used correctly, these intervals can enhance our productivity and the quality of our work.
For instance, Mercury retrograde is a good time for revising and updating your procedures, mailing lists, and other systems, because during the retrograde, you tend to go over things from the past and find the glitches or dead wood. Sort out old files, catch up on correspondence, finish that backlog of paperwork, compile those tedious statistics the boss insists on every few months, get back in touch with associates and clients, and catch details that have fallen through the cracks. Reconcile your bank statements, adding all the figures twice for good measure. Deal with those stacks of mail and credit receipts. Go through that pile of magazines, newspapers, or journals that has accumulated, remove the articles you need to keep, and recycle the rest. You get the picture.
As a writer, I cherish and rely on the Mercury retrograde weeks of the year. In fact, I’m not sure I would ever complete a large writing project if it weren’t for this natural rhythm of retrograde and direct motion, for I always have many more ideas and inspirations than I can use while Mercury is direct. I schedule editing and revisions for the retrograde phase, because looking back over the material, I see places where my communication is unclear. I also seem to have more patience to check my data for accuracy, to catch errors and typos, do needed research to back up my conclusions, and do the really tedious pieces like footnotes, a bibliography, and a table of contents. In RETROspect and with a cooler head, I also see the places in the text where it would have been better to keep my opinions to myself! I chose to do most of the revisions for the new edition of this book during a three-week Mercury retrograde. The work went swiftly and well (apart from a tendency to moan, “what was I thinking” when confronted with the more opinionated pronouncements in the 1970s version.)
Those of you who are more advanced in your studies may be interested to know that not all Mercury retrograde spans are alike. Some are smooth, passing with hardly a ripple if one uses sensible precautions. Others are real bears, with nothing running smoothly, an epidemic of computer crashes, and great difficulty in getting paperwork finished or ironing out agreements. In my observation, Mercury’s retrograde motion is not the deciding factor, but rather the aspects Mercury forms to other planets around the time it is stationary turning retrograde. From around the time it turns retrograde to the time it turns direct, it moves fairly slowly, so any difficult aspects Mercury forms will be in effect continuously for about three weeks
What if your chart printout shows that you have Mercury retrograde natally? Does that mean you will always endure the kinds of mishaps and struggles that are attributed to Mercury’s retrograde periods? There are many claims about what it means to have Mercury retrograde in the birth chart. Some books claim that the person’s development is delayed in that area of life or that they are more introverted in that area or slower to take action or as if that planet were a bit of a dumb note. Frankly, I am not convinced that any of those theories would hold up if subjected to rigorous statistical study. With AstroDataBank, we have a wonderful tool for testing conclusions about any given astrological pattern.
One reader of my column who was concerned about this question had natal Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius conjunct the Sun, and I thought it would be fun to see who matched her Mercury and its aspects. Using AstroDatabank’s search function to find individuals with Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius, I came up with 103 examples, including quite a number of astrologers, authors, evangelists and artists. To belie the claim that Mercury in Sagittarius would be more introverted when retrograde, the group included such livewires as Better Middler, Tina Turner, and Sammy Davis, Jr. I next looked for people sharing that reader’s conjunction of Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius to the Sun and narrowed it down to 54. They included billionaire J. Paul Getty, former House Speaker Tip O’Neal, mystery writer Rex Stout, and the wild and woolly entertainer Little Richard—hardly folks who are mentally backward or slow to take action.
One noticeable pattern is that when Mercury is retrograde in the birth chart, it does seem to reverse many of the "rules" about Mercury's retrograde periods. Many people with this placement seem to find it natural to sign contracts, buy cars, and make major decisions while Mercury is retrograde, and they do just fine. Especially if the aspects to Mercury in the natal chart are favorable ones, there seems to be little difficulty. -

Mac's Stars - Mac McLaughlin.....macsstars.com/index.php
Happy Valentine’s Day and it may be a happy day indeed. The day starts off with an excellent sun - Mars triangle instilling the young bucks with the courage that will be required to step up to the plate and let their true intentions be known. By mid day the moon squares off with Saturn casting fears of rejection and a case of down right cold feet. It means that the ladies will be winnowing out the Neanderthals and all of you crude dudes will have to shape up or ship out. By evening time the Gemini moon harmonizes sweetly with Mercury, opening up the lines of communication beautifully. He has a chance to show his true self hidden behind the macho facade. She has an opportunity to express her true feelings, hopes, desires and fears. Neptune sits close to the sun bringing an air of surreal magic that the lovers will recall for the rest of their lives.
On another level the sun-Neptune combination may cast a spell of apprehension and doubt. Take your time and let things work out. The lunar eclipse on February 20 and the days following will bring it all home. On a cosmic level we are working out some very powerful and ancient karma with our lovers as we have no doubt traveled with these souls throughout countless lives in which all manner of connectedness may have occurred. No mistake about it, if you step over the magic threshold and become intimate, know that you are married in the eyes of the angels. No one night stands in the universe, no casual sex either. If you go there it can only be by association with these souls somewhere in the past.
We rush towards one another happily casting all manner of nets over each other. Whereas on a cosmic karmic level we may want to help each other cast off the nets of indebtedness that have accrued over a vast amount of time. Our children, partners, parents and all others that we have accounts with will come our way providing myriad opportunities to alleviate and balance the ledger once again. Yahoo! Here we go, merrily skipping down the road of matrimonial bliss.
Finally, Saturn is in close proximity with the eclipse which may indicate the passing of a King or other powerful and notable person in our midst.
ONE PLANET, ONE PEOPLE
AQUARIUS
Venus enters Aquarius on February 17 and stays until mid March. She will enhance life in many ways for she brings beauty and grace to the table. Mercury stands still as he prepares to move forward on February 18 in your sign as well. Life gets back to normal, whatever normal is, especially for an Aquarius. You may be in the mood to effect some changes in your life regarding lifestyle, habits etc. It is time to do it.

URANUS AND THE SIGN OF AQUARIUS
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 6:01 PMURANUS AND THE SIGN OF AQUARIUS
Uranus and Neptune.... Mutual Reception
Uranus, as the generational ruler of Aquarius, represents changes brought about by mind power or, barring that, unexpected changes such as coups and crashes. The point is, where Uranus walks, the earth shakes. Uranus, however, does have purpose; there is no need for a water bearer if there is no need for water and water is a necessity of life; ergo change is mandatory for advancement. This planet of the future forces mental, physical, emotional or societal changes whether we want
Because of the length of transit cycles of the planets involved, this Mutual Reception occurs very infrequently. Mathematically, figuring 84 years for a Uranian circuit and 250 years for Pluto, the configuration could manifest every 500 years, or so. The last opportunity for that “hit” was around 1800, but it missed by a couple of years. The most recent events, then, happened early in the fourteenth century; Uranus in Scorpio set the scene to kill the Middle Ages and Pluto in Aquarius planted the seed to birth the Renaissance. The politically fragmented and geologically isolated world in which feudal lords and the Church ruled with a heavy hand gave way to a new world of exploration and expansion of all horizons, not only physical and societal but also in the areas of philosophy, industry, art and literature.
The Mutual Reception between Uranus in Pisces and Neptune in Aquarius occurs about every 165 years. That regularity is due to the fact that the cycle of Uranus is approximately every 84 years and Neptune’s transit is about every 168 years, roughly twice that of Uranus. In the sign of Pisces, Uranus becomes more the dream and the element of change than the instrument and the product. Neptune in Aquarius recognizes injustices and inequities, is full of ideas to correct them but is often unable to accomplish more than talk. This Mutual Reception will bring an atmosphere of reform, a desire for change and enlightenment but rarely does this foggy mixture of air and water do more than blow smoke rings. A demonstration needs a helping of fire and earth signs to accomplish anything. In his desire to be a good King and gain money for his people, Charles II of England entered into a secret agreement with Louis XIV of France in 1507. Charles agreed to be tolerant and grant indulgence to Catholics in England so long as Louis would send money for the poor. Parliament soon learned about the arrangement and agreed to allow Louis to keep sending the money, but only if Charles would turn it over to them. (Sounds like the U.S. Budget Office, doesn’t it?)
Fish and fishing were very important to the American colonies. By the 1670s the Reverend Hugh Peters had organized fisheries at Marblehead, Massachusetts and had created an industry for dried codfish. The fish was so economically profitable for the Massachusetts Bay Colony that a sculpture of a codfish was installed in the capital at Boston. The fisherman divided the fish into three classes. The largest ones were sent to local markets; middle sized fish were dried and exported to Europe; the smallest fish were sold to traders, most of whom took them to the West Indies where they bartered for molasses to bring back to make rum. The West Indies slave traders used the fish as food for slaves both on land and aboard transport ships. [An astrological keyword lesson: Reverends, fish and slaves are all associated with Neptune and the sign of Pisces.]
Entrepreneurial activities, feeding people and all classes around the world and erecting a statue to a fish are all creative strokes of brilliance, reaching all people everywhere and ingenuous, if not a little bizarre. In 1835 federal troops were dispensed to Florida to remove the Seminole Indians to their new “reservation” west of the Mississippi River. Chief Osceola refused to go on the grounds that his father was not an Indian. Several others demonstrated with him; the Second Seminole War ensued and lasted until 1842. The cost to the United States was 1500 dead, $20 million and loss of honor, for Chief Osceola had been arrested while negotiating under a flag of truce. He died in prison on January 30, 1838.
Elijah P. Lovejoy [b. November 9, 1802, Albion, Maine], a black newspaper publisher in Alton, Illinois was murdered by rioters on November 7, 1837. He had been constantly harassed, his business had been burned, his presses had been smashed on several occasions, but he persisted. Lovejoy became known as the “martyr abolitionist.” (By the way, if you ever get to Alton, across the Missouri River from Saint Louis, be sure to visit the Lovejoy Monument. It is at the highest point in town, is visible from everywhere and it truly is breathtaking.)
The first prohibition law in the United States was passed in Tennessee on January 26, 1838. Cold water societies had formed in many areas in 1836. Introduced by Reverend Thomas P. Hunt, these groups enlisted Sunday School children to gather pledges not to drink from the adult members of their family and neighborhood. In 1840 the Washington Temperance Society was organized; within three years the Society claimed to have “reformed” 500,000 intemperate drinkers and 100,000 downright alcoholics (sounds like a pretty wild bunch had always hung around Washington, doesn’t it?). The idea became “Tea, totally” and “Lips that touch wine shall never touch mine.” Incidentally, in Washington 500,000 intemperate drinkers and 100,000 downright alcoholics probably consumed a record breaking number of bottles of medical elixirs and tonics that year.
Moving right along, the first recorded use of ether was on March 30, 1842 by Dr. Crawford W. Long of Jefferson, Georgia during surgery to remove a tumor from a patient’s neck. However, being right in step and only four years behind the times, Dr. William T. G. Morton was the first physician to demonstrate the benefits of ether before members of the medical profession at a seminar on October 16, 1846.
The next Mutual Reception between Uranus in Pisces and Neptune in Aquarius will occur during the first decade of the new century. We could guess, based on past performance, that the medical profession might conduct a seminar to learn that proper nutrition is healthy and vitamin A is okay; that tobacco and alcohol will be banned and marijuana will be legalized; that five loaves and three boat loads of fish will feed a lot of people with one left over for a statue, and that Charles II, the “Merry Monarch” had it right, “It’s the Economy, Stupid!” -
